'A ripening plums'
Maureen Wallis
Having spent many years painting equine portraits and other animals by commission, I have always been fascinated with stained glass. Since as a child, studying the rich colours of light, filtering through church windows, (during many an overlong sermon). Many of my pieces are inspired by the changing light of our northern skies, from the dark blues of storm clouds to the orange & reds, of sunsets and sunrises on the hills. The contrast between the airy illusion of the glass and the strength and roughness of the stone, or steel, represent the delicate beauty of this environment and it’s harshness and durability. I sometimes deliberately leave holes between the glass to create the feeling of fragility and allow the piece to evolve, to take on it’s own form. Inspiration comes in many forms, sometimes it may be a sight or experience half lost in memory that somehow emerges wanting to be recognised. Sometimes it is from a new and fresh experience, mostly it is from nature and the beauty around us that we often take for granted. I now work from my own studio unit at The Reeth Dales centre, Nr Richmond N. Yorks.
